Fallen Hero: LCpl Robert Crutchfield

Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield survived 14 months of war in Iraq, but not the war on the streets at home.

When the 21-year-old Marine returned home for Christmas in 2007, he heeded the warnings of others, that a Marine on leave might be a prime target for robbery, so he carried only $8 in his pocket.

On January 5th, Crutchfield and his girlfriend were at a bus stop when two hoodlums grabbed him, threw him against a telephone pole, rifled through his pockets and took all he had. $8.

They told him since he was a Marine and didn't have any money, "he didn't deserve to live".

Then they shot him point-blank in the neck.

LCpl Crutchfield spent weeks in rehabilitation with feeding and breathing tubes and was doing well with therapy, and had even begun eating solid foods. But on May 17th he came down with an infection and suffered a massive heart attack. He died on May 18th.

LCpl Crutchfield was buried in the Western Reserve National Cemetery near Akron on the same day as a Vietnam veteran, two veterans from World War II and three from Korea.
