Pfc. Markie T. Sims, 20, of Citra, FL, died Dec. 29 in Panjwal, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
He was assigned to the 38th Engineer Company, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, under control of the 7th Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA
Sims had attended North Marion High School and graduated from Marion Technical Institute in 2011.
Sims Boone married his high school sweetheart, Shakeli Boone, in October.
She is pregnant with their first child, a little boy.
Sims' younger brother, Demarrio, was scheduled to start basic training on January 6th, which would have been his brother's birthday. The date has been pushed back.
Sims was awarded the national Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign medal and the Global War on terrorism Service Medal.
